Why do I have to pay?
When you park in Amsterdam, you are using the public space. Space is precious and scarce in Amsterdam. We want to limit car traffic so that the city remains accessible and liveable. As a result you must pay for parking. The closer you get to the city centre, the higher the parking fee.

What is additional tax collection?
When you park, you are using public space for which you have to pay. You are paying tax or the so-called parking fee. When you don't pay, you will receive a notice, the additional tax collection.

What is fiscal parking?
When you want to use a parking space for which you have to pay, you must pay a parking fee (tax). This is called fiscal parking. In case you don’t pay, you will receive a notice to pay the tax. The Municipality of Amsterdam, Department Parkeerdiensten (parking services) will send you this notice.

What is illegal parking?
Are you parking where parking is not allowed, on the pavement or on a disabled parking space for which you don't have the required permit? In that case you are breaching the law and you will be fined by the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB).

Why did I receive a parking fine?
When you are using a paid parking space, you must pay a parking fee. When you don’t pay enough, you will risk an additional tax collection assessment.

To whom do I pay the additional tax collection assessment?
You pay the additional tax collection assessment to the Tax Department of the Municipality of Amsterdam. You will receive the additional tax collection assessment by regular mail. The parking ticket contains the details of the Tax Department and how you can pay.

Who checks whether I have paid?
The Municipality of Amsterdam, Department Parkeerdiensten (parking services) performs the screening. Special scan cars are checking the registration number of your car. The Department Parkeerdiensten (parking services) sends the data to the Tax Department of the Municipality of Amsterdam.

When do I have to pay?
When you are using a parking space you must pay, whether you are parking all day or just a few minutes. Short term parking is parking too!

What is parking?
You are parking when you have parked your car in a parking space, and for that reason you must pay the parking fee. Including if you:

  • leave people in the car;

  • keep the engine running;

  • have put on the alarm lights;

  • stop briefly to answer your phone;

  • drop off an envelope;

  • load or unload a full shopping bag.
